Canadian Armed Forces, Canada

The crew representing the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) is comprised of Officer Cadets, women and men, from the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC), and also a few recent graduates of the College.

The CAF crew includes highly-motivated members representing all three services, and are energetic and ready to prove themselves on the River Thames this summer. RMC coaches Paul Overvelde and Stephen Lutz are training the selected OCdts in advance of The King’s Cup.

During the fall rowing season, the RMC crew annually competes against some of the top civilian universities in Canada.

Naval Cadet Jack Murphy is from Toronto, Ontario. He will serve as a Naval Warfare Officer. He is entering his final year of an undergraduate Honours degree in Political Science at the Royal Military College of Canada. Outside of rowing he has previously enjoyed playing hockey and rugby, this has provided him with a stubborn determination to succeed.

Lieutenant Carolyn Pumphrey is from Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador. She serves as a Naval Warfare Officer. Since graduating from the Royal Military College of Canada in 2011, Carolyn has been promoted in the Royal Canadian Navy to the rank of Lieutenant(N). In addition to working as a Flag Lieutenant for the Commander Canadian Fleet Atlantic, Lt(N) Pumphrey has sailed multiple times to Europe and the Caribbean on deployments and training exercises. Currently, she is a Squadron Commander at the military college, working directly with cadets to improve their leadership and develop them into reputable Officers in the Canadian Armed Forces. Carolyn is a multi-sport athlete, having played on the College basketball team before competing for Canada post-graduation at the 19th CISM World Military Women’s Volleyball Championships.

Officer Cadet Brittany Cooper is from Major, Saskatchewan. She will serve as an Intelligence Officer and has completed one year of her undergraduate degree in History from the Royal Military College of Canada. Brittany started rowing in the fall of 2018 after growing up in the rodeo world, where she represented her province at the National High School Finals before arriving at the military college.

Second Lieutenant Billy Campbell is an Infantry Officer from Mississauga, Ontario. Having graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada with an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering in May 2019, 2Lt Campbell is one of the newest commissioned officers in the Canadian Armed Forces. Campbell plays multiple instruments, and he enjoys taking in artistic venues and films.

Officer Cadet Deven Deguara is from Holland Landing, Ontario. He will serve as an Engineer Officer in the Army. He has completed three years of his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering at the Royal Military College of Canada. Deven only started rowing last year after growing up playing rugby, a sport that brought him into the spotlight in grade 12 when his team was featured during an intermission at the Canadian Rugby 7s Championship.

Naval Cadet Shamus Mountford is from Halifax, Nova Scotia. He will serve as a Logistics Officer in the Navy.  He is entering his final year of an undergraduate degree in Political Science at the Royal Military College of Canada. The King’s Cup will be something of a homecoming for Mountford, as he spent time living in the United Kingdom in his youth while his father was posted there.

Officer Cadet Liam Vickers has rowed for eight years and is one of the most experienced members of the Canadian Armed Forces crew in the King’s Cup. Liam originates from St. Catherines, Ontario. He will be a Construction Engineering Officer and is entering his final year at the Royal Military College of Canada in pursuit of an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering.

Second Lieutenant Liam Cooke is from Mineville, Nova Scotia. He currently serves as a Pilot and he earned his commission in the Canadian Armed Forces after completing an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering at the Royal Military College of Canada. Although he is relatively new to rowing, Cooke brings experience from his days competing at Canadian Canoe Kayak National Championships.

Officer Cadet Adam Blok is from Maple Ridge, British Columbia. He will serve as an Infantry Officer. Blok has one year remaining in his undergraduate Honours degree in Political Science at the Royal Military College of Canada. Apart from rowing and his military duties, Blok is a fan of the cyberpunk film genre. Blok’s grandparents grew up in the Netherlands during the Second World War, and witnessed Canadian soldiers liberating their town. His grandparents’ admiration of Canada and stories of the Canadian soldiers led Blok to a career in the military.

Officer Cadet Ethan Lockie is from Simcoe, Ontario. Ethan will serve as a Signals Officer and has completed three years of his undergraduate degree as an Honours student in History at the Royal Military College of Canada. A well-read member of the Canadian Armed Forces crew, Lockie brings a good sense of humour to the boat.

Second Lieutenant Drew Spinney is a Construction Engineering Officer from Truro, Nova Scotia. Newly commissioned in the Canadian Armed Forces, Spinney graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada in May of 2019 with an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering. In 2018, 2Lt Spinney took on the challenge of completing the Iron Warrior, which is a 50km race   that includes running with a 40-pound rucksack, portaging with a canoe, and canoeing.

Carolyn is a multi-sport athlete, having played on the College basketball team before competing for Canada post-graduation at the 19th CISM World Military Women’s Volleyball Championship.
